The Arab Justice Ministers Council, convening for its 40th session in Cairo, has commended Morocco’s efforts in counterterrorism, particularly its role in hosting the UN Office for Counter-Terrorism and Training in Africa.
During the session at the Arab League headquarters, the council endorsed Morocco’s proposal to host a regional forum in collaboration with international partners to develop institutional and legal mechanisms supporting terrorism victims.
Representing Morocco at the session were Mohamed Ait Ouali, ambassador to Cairo and permanent representative to the Arab League, and Hicham Mellati, Director of Criminal Affairs, Pardons, and Crime Detection.
Morocco’s Minister of Justice Abdellatif Ouahbi also participated in the session, where he addressed the need for a legal framework to regulate social media networks, calling to implement measures to prevent their infringement on individual freedoms.
The council recognized the need to regulate parallel financial investigations in financial crimes and supported training sessions and regional forums to boost these efforts.
Morocco suggested holding a 2024 workshop focused on managing funds seized from money laundering and terrorism financing cases, with these issues being central to the session’s discussions under the framework of the Arab Convention on Counter-Terrorism.
The council also supported Morocco’s plan for a 2025 international conference in Marrakech on regulating AI, urging active Arab participation.
Other discussions included new conventions on refugee conditions, personal data protection, and laws on preventing hate speech, protecting displaced persons, and shielding children from recruitment in armed conflicts.
Meanwhile, Morocco was re-elected to the council’s executive bureau, and Rachid Ouadifi was appointed to the board of the Arab Center for Legal and Judicial Research.
As part of Morocco’s ongoing efforts to promote progress, Minister of Solidarity Naima Ben Yahya yesterday reaffirmed the nation’s dedication to advancing gender equality and empowering women and girls during the 22nd regular meeting of the Executive Council of the Arab Women Organization (OFA), also held in Cairo.
She said that Morocco’s social protection framework aims to significantly improve the lives of women, addressing systemic marginalization and the tendency to treat women as a homogenous group.
