Big changes are coming to the Moroccan justice system, said the Justice Minister Abdellatif Ouahbi. According to the minister, the country will soon implement a new law on alternative sentences, which focuses on handing out less prison terms.
Speaking to the Parliament on Monday, Ouahbi shared updates in the House of Representatives. He revealed that three teams are working hard to make this change happen. One team is sorting out the legal details. Another is writing the rules. The third is picking the company to help run the system, he explained.
Judges are already following training sessions to streamline this major policy switch, the minister said. The government also set up offices in courts to use electronic bracelets to track offenders.
The ministry is also working on a new electronic portal to help judges match community service to an offender’s skills and where they live.
Morocco is changing how it punishes some crimes. Instead of sending every offender to prison, the new law allows for alternative sentences that aims to reduce crowded prisons and help offenders change for the better.
Alternative sentences include community service, where offenders help by cleaning public spaces or working in schools or hospitals.
Some may wear electronic bracelets to track their movements, ensuring they stay where they’re supposed to. Others could pay fines or attend programs for drug addiction or anger management.
The changes, based on Law 43.22, aim to fix problems in the justice system while giving offenders a chance to give back to the community. It’s a bold move towards a more modern, fairer way of dealing with crime.
