Morocco’s National Agency for Water and Forests (ANEF) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) hosted an international workshop on Wednesday in Rabat, focusing on the integrated management of wildfires and innovative solutions in this area.
The workshop, which will run until February 15, is part of an international cooperative program led by ANEF and was initiated in partnership with FAO’s Committee on Mediterranean Forestry Questions (Silva Mediterranea) and the Near East Network on Wildlands Forest Fire (NENEFIRE).
The workshop aims to create a platform for sharing knowledge on challenges related to wildland forests and promoting best practices. It also showcases Morocco’s initiatives, along with those of other member countries, especially in the restoration and rehabilitation of forests affected by fires.
Additionally, the workshop marks the first official meeting of the members of NENEFIRE, presided over by Morocco. It was attended by representatives from the international Global Fire Hub, which specializes in combating wildland fires.
A field visit is planned for Thursday to Tangier province, where participants will see firsthand the techniques and strategies adopted by ANEF to restore the affected forest ecosystems.
This workshop highlights the importance of international cooperation and the commitment of countries in the region to tackle the growing challenges posed by wildland fires, especially in the context of climate change.
It also seeks to strengthen local capacities to ensure the sustainable and resilient management of forest ecosystems in the face of socio-economic and environmental challenges.
