Morocco’s athletics team is doing a fantastic job at the Islamic Solidarity Games (ISG) in Riyadh, with two more medals added by Rachid M’hamdi and Soukaina Hajji.
M’hamdi ran a great race to win the gold medal in the men’s 400m. The Moroccan sprinter finished in 45.40, ahead of the UAE’s Emmanuel Bamidele (45.71) and Nigeria’s Gafari Atanda Badmus who also clocked 45.71 but finished third after a photo finish.
M’hamdi told MAP he was proud to represent Morocco and thanked the Royal Moroccan Athletics Federation and the Moroccan National Olympic Committee for their support. He said the race was intense until the last 50 meters but his preparation allowed him to win in the last part of the race.
On the other hand, Soukaina Hajji added another medal to Morocco’s numbers by winning bronze in the women’s 800m. She finished in 2:04.34 at Prince Faisal bin Fahd Stadium. Bahrain’s Nelly Korir won gold with 2:02.59 and Uganda’s Halima Nakaayi silver with 2:03.14.
In total, Morocco now has a tally of 22 medals (10 gold, 4 silver and 8 bronze) at this stage of the competition.
The Moroccan delegation participates with 82 athletes competing in 13 sports, athletics, boxing, duathlon, e-sports, futsal, parasports, jiu-jitsu, judo, karate, wrestling, muay-thai, swimming and taekwondo. The Games run until November 21 and are broadcasted.
