Morocco’s meteorological authority has issued an orange-level weather alert for multiple provinces as the country prepares for significant snowfall and heavy rainfall from Sunday through Monday.
The General Directorate of Meteorology announced that snow accumulations of 20 to 30 centimeters are expected in Al Haouz and Azilal provinces between Sunday at 12:00 p.m. and Monday at 9:00 a.m. These areas will experience the heaviest snowfall during the weather event.
Eight additional provinces will also see notable snow accumulation during the same period. Ifrane, Boulemane, Beni Mellal, Khenifra, Midelt, Ouarzazate, Sefrou, and Tinghir are forecast to receive between 10 and 15 centimeters of snow.
The weather system will bring more than just snow to Morocco’s northern regions. Heavy thunderstorms are predicted for several coastal provinces on Sunday between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Tanger-Assilah, Fahs-Anjra, Tetouan, Larache, and Kénitra will experience intense rainfall with accumulations of 25 to 35 millimeters.
Current weather conditions on Saturday show Morocco already experiencing challenging conditions. Low clouds and fog formations are affecting Atlantic coastal areas throughout the morning hours.
Cold temperatures have settled across mountainous regions, with frost occurring during morning and nighttime hours on the reliefs, southeastern areas, Oriental region, and eastern high plateaus.
The Tangier region and Gharb area are seeing dense cloud infiltration with scattered rainfall expected overnight. Coastal areas between the center and south are experiencing strong wind gusts.
Saturday’s temperature readings reflect the cold snap affecting much of the country. Mountain regions, including the Atlas, Rif, and eastern high plateaus are recording minimum temperatures between -4°C and 4°C.
Southern provinces and central areas of the country are seeing more moderate conditions with temperatures ranging from 10°C to 16°C. Other regions are experiencing temperatures between 6°C and 10°C.
The meteorological service reports that daily temperatures are rising in southern areas while remaining steady or declining elsewhere.
Sea conditions vary across Morocco’s coastlines, with calm to slightly rough waters in the Mediterranean, Gibraltar Strait, and between Cap Spartel and Larache. Other coastal areas are experiencing slightly rough to rough sea conditions.
The weather alert marks a notable turn in Morocco’s climatic conditions and patterns, as winter weather intensifies across several regions of the kingdom.
