Casablanca and Oujda have joined the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Global Network of Learning Cities, the Paris-based UN agency announced on Friday.
UNESCO welcomes the two Moroccan cities among the 72 newly designated members, spread across 46 countries, within the Global Network of Learning Cities, “in recognition of their outstanding commitment to making the right to education for all and at all ages a reality at the local level,” according to a statement from the organization.
On the UNESCO website, the mayors of Casablanca, Nabila Rmili, and Oujda, Mohamed Azzaoui, share their experiences regarding their respective cities’ commitment in this regard.
Rmili said that in Casablanca, “lifelong learning is at the heart of the learning city project,” enabling everyone to “adapt to rapid changes in the world of work and to urban and climate challenges.”
“The city is working with actors in the education, economic, and community sectors to build an accessible and inclusive learning environment,” the mayor of Casablanca explained, who is convinced that “investing in continuing education means strengthening skills, inclusion, and collective resilience of all Casablancans.”
In the same vein, Azzaoui emphasized that lifelong learning is “essential for building an inclusive and resilient society in Oujda.”
“It enables our citizens to adapt to economic changes, strengthen their skills and thus actively contribute to local development. By investing in continuous education, we prepare a more innovative, equitable and sustainable city,” he pointed out.
