The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has appointed Congolese referee Jean-Jacques Ndala Ngambo to take charge of the opening match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations between Morocco and Comoros.

The fixture, which will officially kick off the tournament, is scheduled for December 21 at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, following the opening ceremony scheduled to begin at 18:30 local time.

Ndala is 38 years old and easily one of Africa’s most seasoned officials, a face you often see at the big continental competitions. His appointment definitely signals that CAF has a lot of confidence in his ability to handle such a high-profile opening match.

He will be supported by an international officiating team, with Mauritanian referee Dahane Beida assigned to oversee VAR duties. CAF’s decision highlights the importance placed on strong officiating standards from the very start of the competition.

This match opens Group A, a group that also includes Mali and Zambia. Everyone expects the stadium to be absolutely electric with a passionate home crowd cheering on the Atlas Lions.
