Morocco’s overall dam fill rate has risen significantly due to recent rainfall, from 28% to 48% nationally, which has effectively secured an additional year of drinking water supply for the country, according to the minister of Water Nizar Baraka.

During question time at the Upper House, the governmental official reported that water inflows reached 4.07 billion cubic meters (m³) between September and January 20, including 3.6 billion m³ over the last forty days.

He also noted that this level is 24% above the average observed between 1990 and 2020, describing these indicators as “very positive.”

The snow-covered areas reached a record of 55,195 km², before receding to 22,600 km² currently, a level unprecedented since 2018, he added.

In this context, he stressed the need to continue efforts, in line with Royal Directives, to accelerate the construction of dams, noting that the Tamri Dam’s construction period has been reduced by three years, with completion and filling scheduled for June.

Baraka also reported the completion of 4,221 exploratory boreholes, with a flow exceeding 8,800 liters per second, benefiting 5.8 million rural residents, as well as the construction of 244 large water tanks and 41 rainwater harvesting projects on building rooftops.

Finally, he announced the continuation of wastewater treatment, aiming to increase from 40 million m³ to 100 million m³ by 2027, alongside programs to supply drinking water to urban and rural areas, benefiting 22,000 douars and 767 rural centers, within the framework of the National Water Plan 2050.
