Gov’t Moves Toward Integrated Sports Management System, Says Akhannouch

The government has embarked, in recent years, on a reform process aimed at moving from a fragmented approach to sports management to an integrated system based on organization, coaching, broadening the base of participation, and improving the range of sports on offer, Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch said on Tuesday in Rabat.

In a presentation to the House of Councillors during the monthly general policy questions session,  Akhannouch stated that the evolution of national sport’s structure marks the first indicator of this transformation, with Morocco now having 57 national sports federations that oversee various disciplines, supervise competitions, support training, and ensure Morocco’s representation at the continental and international levels.

Alongside these federations are 261 regional leagues, the Head of government added, a figure that reflects the territorial extent of the sports system and confirms that the organization is no longer limited to the center.

In the same context, Akhannouch emphasized the importance of community organizations that are close to citizens and capable of accommodating daily activities, noting that the number of sports associations has grown remarkably, from approximately 4,745 associations in 2021 to more than 7,000 associations in 2025, an increase of more than 53%.

This network now has around 500,000 members, he noted, adding that this figure “reflects the scale of the practice, but at the same time places us under a great responsibility in terms of supervision, quality, and governance.”

In terms of sports facilities, Akhannouch noted that nearly 2,500 sports and social facilities were renovated or received support during the same period, emphasizing that Morocco now has an extensive and diverse network of facilities, including more than 1,050 local sports fields, 157 multi-sport halls, and 717 local social and sports centers, not counting the sports facilities in which local authorities have invested their own resources.

In this vein, he emphasized that these figures reflect a clear choice to direct a substantial portion of public funding toward local sports.

Thus, the program to create 800 local sports fields in rural and suburban areas between 2021 and 2025 is a strategic project that embodies the government’s vision of making sports accessible to all citizens, explained Akhannouch.

The focus of public investment on local sports facilities and community sports centers in rural areas and under-equipped urban neighborhoods is an expression of a clear political will to make participation in sports an effective right, regardless of location or financial means, he argued.

Akhannouch then emphasized the importance of connecting local sports facilities to other components of the sports system, particularly schools and associations, stressing that an integrated approach that makes local sports facilities a link between students, associations, and neighborhoods has the potential to transform these structures into effective tools for education, prevention, and building local human capital.
