Local authorities of the Sidi Kacem province evacuated several families from areas threatened by the rising water levels of the Sebou river on Friday, in a preventive measure to safeguard their lives and property.

Several villages in the communes of Al Haouafate, Sidi El Kamel, and Ermilate are concerned, with residents relocated to safe areas and other equipped accommodation centers.

In Douar Dekhla, part of the Al Haouafate commune, 69 people were evacuated from houses at risk of flooding. Of these, 27 were accommodated at the social protection facility “Dar Taliba of Al Haouafate,” while the others were guided to relatives living in safe zones away from the river.

In a statement to MAP, the director of the facility, Idriss Moumen, said that it is fully committed to these preventive operations aimed at mitigating the effects of the Sebou River floods.

The establishment has made all necessary logistical resources available, in close coordination with local authorities and the Entraide Nationale Agency, to accommodate the affected families, he added, emphasizing that “lodging, bedding, and food are provided, and those received between last night and today are in safe conditions.”

Meanwhile, the commune of Sidi El Kamel underwent a similar intervention, with 40 people evacuated to relatives, while in the commune of Ermilate, 10 people were evacuated and hosted by their families.

Additionally, special attention was given to protecting livestock, the main source of livelihood for local populations, with 1,180 sheep and 200 cattle moved to safe areas.

Response teams and local authorities remain on high alert and continue to closely monitor the Sebou River’s situation to ensure citizens’ safety and intervene immediately if needed.
