A Moroccan parliamentary delegation held a series of meetings on Friday in Panama with officials from several regional parliamentary bodies, on the sidelines of its participation in the 39th annual General Assembly of the Latin American and Caribbean Parliament (PARLATINO).

The delegation, which mainly included the member of the bureau of the House of Councilors and its representative to the Latin American and Caribbean Parliament, Abderrahman El Ouafa, met with the president and members of the executive board of PARLATINO, the president of the Mercosur Parliament (PARLASUR), the president of the Central American Parliament (PARLACEN), and representatives of several member countries, according to a press release from the House of Councilors.

During his exchange with the president of PARLATINO, Patricio Rolando González, El Ouafa welcomed the distinguished course of relations uniting the Kingdom with regional organizations in Latin America and the Caribbean. He specified that the choice of Morocco as the first country outside Latin America to host a meeting of PARLATINO’s executive board is a testament to the strength of these ties.

This dynamic is in line with the Kingdom’s strategic orientation aimed at promoting South-South cooperation, under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, he affirmed.

For their part, the president of PARLATINO and the members of its executive board expressed their high regard for Morocco. They praised the active role of the House of Councilors in supporting the body’s institutional action and its initiatives aimed at building bridges with Africa and the Arab world, notably through the South-South Parliamentary Dialogue Forum.

In the same vein, the president of PARLASUR, Rodrigo Gamarra, expressed his admiration for the development and modernization process in Morocco, considering that the Kingdom constitutes a model to follow for countries of the South, particularly in South America.

For her part, the president of PARLACEN, Karla Gutiérrez, also praised the active presence of the Moroccan Parliament within her organization. She recalled key milestones of this cooperation, including the visit of PARLACEN’s executive board to Morocco—including the Southern Provinces—as well as the participation of the president of the House of Councilors in PARLACEN’s proceedings in El Salvador.

Ms. Gutiérrez reiterated the great respect enjoyed by the Moroccan democratic and development model under the wise leadership of HM King Mohammed VI.

The Parliament of the Kingdom of Morocco remains the only legislative institution at the Arab and African levels to enjoy the status of observer member and partner with the main parliamentary groupings of Latin America, the Caribbean, and Mexico, notably PARLATINO, the Andean Parliament, PARLACEN, PARLASUR, as well as the Forum of Presiding Officers of Legislative Assemblies of Central America and the Caribbean (FOPREL).
