A high-level delegation from the Kingdom of Morocco has just arrived in Managua, Nicaragua, to participate in the regional seminar of the UN Committee of 24 (C-24) for the Caribbean, which is being held from May 25 to 27.

The delegation is led by Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, Ambassador Omar Hilale. It comprises several officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, as well as the Vice-President of the Royal Advisory Council for Saharan Affairs (CORCAS).

Furthermore, at the invitation of the C-24 Chairperson, two locally elected officials from the Moroccan Sahara, namely Ghalla Bahiya of the Dakhla-Oued Eddahab Region and M’hamed Abba of the Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra Region- are participating in this seminar for the eighth consecutive year.

Since 2019, the participation of elected officials from the Moroccan Sahara in this C-24 regional seminar has broken the monopoly on invitations that the “polisario” had enjoyed for decades.

This seminar takes place eight months after the adoption of the historic UN Security Council Resolution 2797, which calls upon the four parties to participate in discussions without preconditions, on the basis of the Autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty, in order to reach a definitive political solution.

The meeting in Managua will serve as an opportunity to brief Committee members and other participants on the latest positive developments regarding the Moroccan Sahara issue, particularly within the context of the discussions initiated by the four parties pursuant to the historic Resolution 2797.

It will also serve to highlight the international momentum of support to the Autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty, a plan backed by 130 countries (representing more than two-thirds of UN Member States, including permanent members of the UN Security Council)- as well as the cascading withdrawals of recognition for the puppet entity.

This seminar, which boasts record attendance compared to previous editions, is being held under the theme “Renewed Commitments, Partnerships, and Innovative Approaches,” with a particular focus on “promoting resilience and sustainability in the face of climate-related challenges, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals.”

In this context, the Moroccan delegation will deliver a presentation highlighting the progress achieved under the New Development Model for the Southern Provinces, a program launched by His Majesty King Mohammed VI in 2015 and endowed with a budget exceeding $10 billion.

This initiative serves as a genuine catalyst for transformation within the Moroccan Sahara region, facilitating the implementation of transformative socio-economic projects, particularly in the fields of infrastructure, renewable energy, the blue economy, and desalination plants.
