In an interview published on the Paris-Saint Germain social channels, Achraf Hakimi asserted his belief in PSG’s ability to replicate its exploit from last season, and win the Champions League again in the 2025/2026 season.
Historically, a back-to-back in the Champions League is no easy feat. Since the competition’s inception in 1955, only 8 clubs have managed to successfully defend their champions status, with Real Madrid being the latest to do so in 2017/2018 – coincidentally Hakimi’s one and only season with the Merengue.
The Moroccan international is aware of the challenge of repeating, especially with PSG’s title-holders status coining them as the team to beat.
“It’s a sort of responsibility. It’s something that gives you the strength to defend a title knowing that we are the champions […] There’s not many teams that have completed a back-to-back, so it is a challenge that motivates us.”
Expected fireworks against Bayern
The PSG fullback could’t hide his excitement to match up against Bayern, describing it as the kind of game both players and fans will greatly enjoy.
“These are the kind of games that are enjoyable to play, the ones you prepare for physically and mentally, even more it being in the Champions league, at home, with our fans. It will be a difficult match. We have an opponent in great form, but I think we’re also in great form.”
He added that it surely will be an incredible game for football fans.
African Ballon d’Or in sight for Hakimi?
The Moroccan international, who was recently named in the FIFPRO World XI, could be set to receive another individual accolade soon.
Hakimi commented on his nomination for the African Ballon d’Or this year, stating it would be a dream to win the award.
“It’s true that it’s not something I’ve always had in mind, but now, when you see that there is a possibility to win it, the truth is it would be a dream to win it […] After my season, I believe I am among those deserving of winning it.”
Though not yet directly confirmed by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), there have been increasing rumors that this year’s CAF Awards could be organized as early as November 19, in Morocco.
Hakimi, who is among the favorites to win the African Ballon d’Or after a stellar individual and collective season with PSG, will be primarily rivaled by Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian winger was the author of a historic season as he led Liverpool’s charge for the 2024/2025 Premier League title.
