African prison officials on Wednesday in Nairobi praised Morocco’s pioneering experience in upholding human rights within the prison system.

In statements to MAP on the sidelines of a high-level consultative workshop of African prison service officials, they emphasized that Morocco’s experience in humanizing prisons can serve as a model for other African countries.

The rehabilitation and reintegration programs in place in Morocco make the Kingdom an example in Africa in terms of prison management, noted Kenya’s Deputy Commissioner of Prisons, Chrisantus Makokha.

Makokha, who is also Regional Commander of Nairobi Prisons, expressed his admiration for the advanced level of Morocco’s prison infrastructure, which meets the highest standards for respecting human rights, particularly regarding training and healthcare facilities.

For her part, the Commissioner of Prisons in the Seychelles, Janet Georges, highlighted that Morocco serves as a reference in Africa for respecting human rights in penitentiary institutions, emphasizing the strict and rigorous enforcement of laws concerning fundamental rights and the quality of training provided to prison staff.

Janet also expressed her country’s interest in benefiting from Morocco’s experience in this area, noting that the Kingdom is a benchmark in training and the adoption of advanced pedagogical methods, as exemplified by the Training Center of the General Delegation for Prison Administration and Reintegration (DGAPR).

Meanwhile, the Director-General of Senegal’s Prison Administration, Aliou Ciss, emphasized that the DGAPR is a model in human rights training in Africa, recalling the signing of an agreement between his country and Morocco in the field of training to strengthen the capacities of Senegalese prison officers.

The high-level consultative workshop of African prison service officials aims to provide a platform for sharing best practices to address the major challenges facing African prison systems.
