A Dutch court has ordered the release of Moroccan kickboxing champion Badr Hari, who was arrested last week on allegations of assaulting his ex-wife.
NL Times reported on Wednesday that a judge in Amsterdam released Hari under conditions, including an area ban for the street where his ex-wife lives.
“The Public Prosecution Service has two incidents that they suspect Hari of,” the news outlet said, noting that the first of the two alleged cases took place in September last year and the latest was on Sunday.
Converging reports indicate that Hari’s ex-wife filed a complaint against him for assault.
A police spokesperson confirmed the news to NL Times.
Taking to social media after news emerged of the case, Romani thanked her followers for their messages and support
“Thank you so much for all the kind messages and support. I would appreciate that, for the children, we are given the space to process it all in peace,” she wrote on an Instagram story on Wednesday.
Dutch media have largely picked the news on the incident, recalling Badr Hari’s 2012 assault on businessman Koen Everink in a skybox at the Amsterdam Arena.
During an appeal court trial, Hari was re-sentenced to a 24-month prison term, which included a 10-month conditional probation period in 2017.
Hari has been making local headlines in recent weeks, especially following the launch of his gym series in Morocco.
A highly regarded kickboxer, he has especially made headlines in recent years for his Glory fights. While he lost his latest Glory bouts, notably against his nemesis Rico Verhoeven in 2016 and 2019, the Moroccan remains a popular figure in his industry.
