The amended Morocco-European Union (EU) agricultural agreement marks a “major milestone” in the construction of a solid multi-level strategic partnership between Rabat and Brussels, said the Italian economist and geopolitical analyst, Domenico Letizia.

“This agreement not only confirms Morocco’s key role as a main economic partner of the EU in Africa and the Arab world, but also strengthens the ties between the two sides of the Mediterranean in a particularly strategic field, namely agriculture and sustainable development,” the expert told MAP in reaction to the signing, on Friday in Brussels, of an exchange of letters amending the Morocco-EU agricultural agreement.

According to Letizia, this agreement, which enshrines the maintaining of a tariff preference for products from the Kingdom’s southern provinces destined to the European market, is “an unparalleled recognition of the Moroccan territory’s economic unity” and contributes to the transparency and traceability of products thanks to clear labelling.

This decision is set to guarantee better protection for European consumers, while promoting economic development in the Kingdom’s different regions, he stressed.

For Italy and Europe, this agreement “bears significant advantages” as it promotes the diversification of agricultural supply chains, improves food security in an uncertain international context, and opens new opportunities for investment for European companies in the Kingdom’s southern provinces, a very dynamic region in full expansion, he pointed out.

He added that strengthening trade ties with Morocco contributes to the stability of the entire Mediterranean region, by encouraging economic growth and job creation.

Strengthening the partnership with Morocco allows us to invest in a future of stability, sustainable growth, and Euro-African dialogue, in which Italy can also play a leading role, he concluded.
