The Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU) has endorsed the declaration of the 7th African Transitional Justice Forum, which was hosted by Morocco last September. The declaration emphasized the necessity of adopting approaches that integrate transitional justice, gender equality, mental health and psychosocial support, and socio-economic justice in Africa.
In a statement issued on Friday following its meeting on “transitional justice and post-conflict peace-building”, the AU PSC welcomed the declaration and reiterated its support for the AU Transitional Justice Policy (AUTJP) and the African Transitional Justice Forum as vital continental frameworks to guide national efforts.
Furthermore, the PSC urged for an increase in AU resources and technical assistance to member states to enhance their institutional capacity for promoting transitional justice in Africa.
The declaration of the 7th African Transitional Justice Forum, held in Morocco, highlighted the interconnectedness between transitional justice, gender equality, mental health, psychosocial support, and socio-economic justice in Africa. It underscored the importance of adopting collaborative approaches, programs, and policies in this regard.
Moreover, the PSC stressed the need for more inclusive participation of victims of conflict-related injustice, including women, youth, girls, and marginalized groups, in all transitional justice processes. This includes supporting civil society organizations engaged in transitional justice initiatives to ensure meaningful participation.
