Botola Pro Put on Hold as LNFP Announces Temporary Suspension

The Moroccan National Professional Football League (LNFP) has announced a temporary suspension of the Botola Pro Inwi, raising questions about the league calendar and the fate of several postponed matches.

In a statement on March 10 the league confirmed that the decision was taken to allow Moroccan clubs competing in continental tournaments to play their upcoming fixtures under the best possible conditions. The break also coincides with the Eid al-Fitr period, giving players and staff additional time during the holiday.

Several Moroccan teams are currently preparing for important continental games in the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup.

As of now, RS Berkane, Wydad AC and Olympic Safi are the 4 clubs still active on the continental stage, prompting the LNFP to adjust the domestic schedule.

Uncertainty over postponed matches

While the suspension aims to ease the calendar, it has also created uncertainty surrounding the postponed matches from Matchday 10.

The league had previously scheduled those matches to take place on Tuesday and Wednesday, but its latest announcement did not clarify whether they would still be played or rescheduled.

Adding to the confusion, the LNFP had earlier decided to bring forward the match between Maghreb de Fès and Olympique Dcheira to make room for the postponed games. Yet it later walked back on the decision without offering any official explanation, fueling debate over how the rest of the league calendar will be managed.

The lack of clarity about the postponed fixtures has triggered plenty of backlash and criticism, with both fans and pundits expressing their dismay and asking questions about how long the league’s apparent lack of organization will last.

Now with multiple matches already delayed and the championship temporarily paused, the LNFP is expected to clarify the revised schedule for the remaining Botola Pro rounds once the break ends and Moroccan clubs complete their continental commitments.
