Brazil’s ruling Workers’ Party (PT) has expressed strong support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan for Western Sahara, saying they support the  commitment to dialogue, international law, and efforts to improve the lives of those directly affected.

Romenio Pereira, the Secretary for International Relations of the PT, reiterated the country’s position that Morocco’s initiative aligns with the pursuit of peace and stability in the region.

In an interview with MAP, Pereira said that Brazil’s stance remains “constructive” and “balanced,” as it aims to support the United Nations’ efforts in finding a peaceful, consensual, and mutually acceptable solution to the Western Sahara conflict.

“Of course, a more expressive support for Morocco’s autonomy plan can be considered …as long as this autonomy is based on dialogue, commitment to international law, and contributes to the well-being of the concerned populations,” he told MAP.

He added, “I believe that Brazil should continue to support these efforts and initiatives that promote peace and stability in the region.”

Pereira also pointed to Brazil’s consistent backing of the autonomy plan, referencing a resolution passed by the Brazilian Senate in June 2023, which endorsed Morocco’s 2007 proposal. In addition, he recalled the visit of Brazil’s Foreign Minister to Rabat in 2024, during which the official praised Morocco’s serious and credible efforts to resolve the conflict.

The Brazilian official also expressed optimism about the “promising” future of relations between Brazil and Morocco.

He noted that recent diplomatic visits and the forthcoming reopening of the Casablanca-Sao Paulo flight route in December signal growing bilateral ties. This momentum, he said, could foster cooperation in key sectors such as food security, green economy, tourism, culture, and technology.

In addition, Pereira stated that collaborative efforts between Morocco and Brazil to tackle climate change are important, describing this as a shared challenge that both countries can address for mutual benefit.

Morocco is currently enjoying significant momentum regarding its sovereignty over its southern provinces, as several countries worldwide have expressed support for its territorial integrity and autonomy plan.

The latest notable addition is France, which recently announced its official backing of Morocco’s proposal as a legitimate and serious solution to the longstanding dispute.
