More than 30 British MPs have sent a letter to Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, David Cameron, urging for the timely recognition of the Autonomy Plan of Morocco as the only viable serious and realistic solution to the Moroccan Sahara conflict.
In their letter, dated May 23, the Mps considered that “in the landscape of international relations and geopolitical stability, few areas present as critical an opportunity for positive influence and mutual benefit as Morocco’s Western Sahara”.
In this logic, “it has become more crucial than ever for UK to strengthen its alliance with stable, like-minded nations to promote regional stability and international security”. “Morocco stands paramount among these partner nations, it is a top strategic ally in North Africa”, underlined the British MPs”.
Recalling the climate of progress and stability reigning in the Moroccan Sahara, the letter also highlighted the economic opportunities offered by this Moroccan region, while not forgetting to link this undeniable progress to the efforts made by Morocco to develop its southern territory, which efforts were observed first-hand by some of the MPs during a visit to the Kingdom.
Continuing their argument, the British Mps considered that ” The Autonomy Initiative proposed by Morocco for Western Sahara, balanced whit respect for local tradition and democratic aspirations, offers a viable path toward lasting peace and stability.
With broad backing from our Western Allies and more than 80 countries worldwide, the initiative is heralded as the most practical and pragmatic path to stability, emphasizing that it is time to move beyond inertia”. “Today, we have the opportunity to adopt a realistic and pragmatic approach”, added the MP’s.
