In a statement today, Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska lauded the “exceptional and extraordinary” partnership between Spain and Morocco in the realm of security.

“The collaboration and cooperation with Morocco are exceptional and extraordinary,” the Spanish minister stated.

During a press briefing at the inauguration of new facilities at the national police dog training center in Valladolid, Grande-Marlaska highlighted that this partnership is founded on mutual trust and goodwill.

“It is a daily effort to serve the interests of both societies and to ensure the rights and freedoms of all,” the minister added.

Emphasizing the strategic importance of the partnership, he also discussed the challenges both countries encounter, noting that the close cooperation between Spanish and Moroccan security forces is vital in the fight against organized crime.

“In a globalized world, it benefits everyone to tackle organized crime through cooperation, loyalty, fidelity, and professionalism,” Grande-Marlaska stated, spotlighting the magnitude of bilateral efforts to boost security.

These discussions came amid a recent mass migration attempt on September 15, when hundreds of predominantly Moroccan youths, along with migrants from sub-Saharan Africa, Algeria, and Tunisia, gathered in Fnideq and nearby mountains to try to cross into Ceuta.

The organized effort was coordinated via social media, drawing the attention of both Moroccan and Spanish authorities.

In January, Morocco’s Interior Minister, Abdelouafi Laftit, and Grande Marlaska met in Rabat to discuss boosting bilateral security cooperation.

This meeting sought to strengthen collaboration on key security issues, following a roadmap established after discussions between King Mohammed VI and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez in April 2022.

The partnership focuses on tackling shared challenges, particularly terrorism and cross-border trafficking, including illegal migration and human trafficking. Both ministers agreed to improve operational coordination and streamline information exchange to better anticipate and address security threats.
