The Dominican Republic reiterated, in New York, its support for Morocco’s efforts to find a political solution to the regional dispute over the Sahara, stressing that the autonomy initiative is the basis for this solution.
Speaking at the regular session of the UN Committee of 24 (June 10-21), Dominican Republic Representative Carla Carlson Consejera emphasized the “crucial role” of the UN Secretary-General in this process aimed at finding a just and peaceful solution to this artificial conflict, through promoting dialogue and negotiations between all parties.
She also commended the efforts made by the UNSG’s Personal Envoy to the Moroccan Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, aimed at facilitating the relaunch of the political process under the auspices of the Secretary-General, including his visits to the region in 2022, 2023 and 2024, in addition to the bilateral consultations he held with all parties concerned.
The diplomat also urged all stakeholders to continue working constructively and maintaining the spirit of compromise that must prevail in this process, stressing that a realistic, viable, lasting and mutually acceptable solution to the Moroccan Sahara issue is possible, in accordance with the relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council.
