The decision by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to declare Senegal forfeited in the final of AFCON Morocco 2025 and to validate a 3-0 score in favor of Morocco is based on the applicable regulations, which consider any team that leaves the pitch without the referee’s authorization as defeated and eliminated, Burkinabè outlet lefaso.net reported.
“This decision, grounded in the applicable regulations, officially awards the victory to Morocco with a score of three goals to nil,” the publication wrote under the headline “AFCON 2025: Morocco declared winner by default, 3-0 after the Appeals Jury’s decision,” adding that this decisive ruling “puts an end” to a match marked by a major incident, while reigniting debate over refereeing and respect for sporting rules.
The outlet noted that the CAF Appeals Jury’s decision relies on the competition’s regulations, particularly Articles 82 and 84 invoked by the continental body, emphasizing that under these provisions, any team leaving the pitch without the referee’s authorization is deemed to have lost and is eliminated.
The Appeals Jury considered that the conduct of the Senegalese team clearly fell within this regulatory framework, justifying an exemplary sanction in line with the established rules, the same source added.
“The Atlas Lions, solid and consistent, had already demonstrated their ability to compete at the highest continental level. However, this particular victory will remain marked by the circumstances of its award, leaving a unique imprint in the history of the Africa Cup of Nations,” the Burkinabè media outlet concluded.
