Morocco has always played its part in advancing football in general, and women’s football in particular, said the President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe.

“I would like to thank HM King Mohammed VI, and the Moroccan government and people for the Kingdom’s hospitality and contribution to the development of football on the continent,” said the CAF President on his arrival at Rabat-Salé airport on Saturday, to attend the opening match of the Women’s African Cup of Nations, scheduled to take place in Morocco from July 5 to 26.

“It’s always very special for me to be back home. Morocco and the Moroccan people hold a special place in my heart, but also in that of CAF’s 54 member associations”, he emphasized.

“We are delighted to be opening the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) for women on Saturday. We are expecting an exciting match between Morocco and Zambia”, Motsepe continued.

According to the CAF President, the level of women’s football in Africa is progressing crescendo, noting that the performance of African women’s teams at the last World Cup in Australia and New Zealand in 2023 demonstrated that “women’s soccer in the continent is world-class”.

Football brings people together, regardless of race, ethnicity, language or religion. We are grateful to Morocco, a land that brings Africans together”, he added.

The Atlas Lionesses will face Zambia this Saturday (9:00 pm) at Rabat’s Olympic Stadium in the opening match of the CAN, before taking on DR Congo on July 9 (8:00 pm).

On the third and final day, scheduled for July 12 (8:00 p.m.), Morocco will face Senegal. Group B comprises Nigeria, Tunisia, Algeria and Botswana, while Group C includes South Africa, Ghana, Mali and Tanzania.
