China Eastern Airlines is set to launch a flight connecting Shanghai and Casablanca via Marseille, starting January 19.
Moroccan news outlet Le360 quoted an informed source who confirmed the news. This new addition will add yet another air connection between the two countries, with the aim to boost bilateral ties.
Both China and Morocco have frequently expressed determination to strengthen relations.
China Eastern Airlines aims to target tourists and business travelers from both countries, Le360 reported.
“Despite the enormous potential of the Chinese market, Morocco welcomed only 60,000 visitors in 2023, compared to more than 200,0000 in 2019,” the news outlet detailed.
In August, Morocco’s carrier Royal Air Maroc (RAM) also announced the resumption of its direct flight connecting Casablanca to Beijing.
The air route will start operating its flights on January 20, with connections between the two destinations three times a week on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
RAM first introduced the flight in January 2020 but suspended it a few weeks later due to COVID-19.
Royal Air Maroc CEO Hamid Addou expressed satisfaction with the opening of the flight route, noting that the airline is very pleased to resume the first direct route linking Morocco and China.
“The Casablanca-Beijing route is primarily dedicated to the development of Moroccan tourism, as 80% of the traffic on this route is expected to consist of foreign tourists,” he said.
The Moroccan carrier also signed 16 agreements with major travel agencies last year in December, with the aim of boosting partnerships with Chinese travel agencies.
