The US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has recently updated its official website with a new map and information about Morocco.
The newly updated map shows all of Morocco’s territory, explicitly recognizing the Western Sahara as an integral part of the North African country.
The CIA’s official website now describes Morocco’s map as showing “major population centers, along with portions of neighboring countries and the North Atlantic.”
In the description, the CIA wrote that “in 2020, the US recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over all of Western Sahara.”
In its factbook, the agency provides comprehensive information on Morocco’s geography, history, economy, political system, demographics, people, and key officials.
This update comes as the world’s attention turns to President-elect Donald Trump’s upcoming inauguration tomorrow.
US-Moroccan ties reached a historic turning point in 2020 when the Trump administration formally recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over the entire territory of Western Sahara.
The recognition included American support for Morocco’s autonomy proposal, which was described as “serious, credible, and realistic” and “the only basis for a just and lasting solution to the dispute.”
Morocco’s diplomacy has proven efficient, garnering support for its autonomy plan from various countries.
France took a decisive step by officially recognizing Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces in Western Sahara on July 30, 2024.
In a letter to King Mohammed VI, French President Emmanuel Macron said that his country “recognizes Morocco’s autonomy plan for the Western Sahara region as the sole basis for reaching a political solution.”
In March 2022, an official statement from Spain endorsed, for the first time, “Morocco’s autonomy plan.”
