The news reported by some international media, claiming a campaign to cull 3 million stray dogs in Morocco is “entirely baseless”, Mohammed Roudani, an official at the Ministry of the Interior’s General Directorate of Local Authorities told MAP.
“There is no such culling campaign. The claims of a plan to cull 3 million stray dogs before the 2030 World Cup are completely unfounded,” emphasized Roudani.
He stressed that local authorities are “voluntarily committed to implementing ethical and sustainable solutions in managing the population of stray dogs, in line with international animal welfare standards.”
Aware of the complexity of the stray dog issue, local authorities—similar to those in other countries— have been actively working to address it as part of efforts to promote services related to health prevention and public hygiene, he recalled.
In this context, he specified that the Ministry of the Interior annually supports local authorities through several initiatives. These include the construction and equipping of animal dispensaries, the adoption of the TNVR method (trap, neuter, vaccinate, release), and the strengthening of municipal hygiene offices with doctors, veterinarians, nurses, and hygiene technicians.
