The National Human Rights Council’s (CNDH) social sector, represented by the Social Works Association and the institution’s worker union, celebrated Amina Bouayach for her election as the head of the Global Human Rights Alliance (GANHRI) on Thursday.
The union and social association stressed the importance of the election, noting that the CNDH president’s candidacy is a “source of pride and honor for all of us.”
Last week, the African Network of Human Rights Institutions (NANHRI) nominated Bouayach for the GANHRI presidency, citing her extensive experience as the institution’s secretary.
“She has represented the alliance with distinction and led key operations with a firm commitment to human rights,” NANHRI said in its official statement.
Bouayach was confirmed as GANHRI’s president at the UN Palace of Nations in Geneva last week in a unanimous vote.
She received support from the alliance’s three other regional groups, including the Americas, Asia-Pacific, and Europe.
Bouayach gave an election speech during the ceremony held on Thursday, noting that this new role requires a full commitment and effectiveness to continue to fulfill duties at the national level, with a broader perspective that will boost roles at the regional, continental, and international levels.
The CNDH head’s goal is to prioritize the adoption of ambitious laws and regulations across the world to boost human rights.
Upon assuming her new role, Bouayach stressed that states must “allocate sufficient budgets to National Human Rights institutions to enable them to fully carry out their tasks in protection, issuing recommendations, and holding authorities accountable for human rights violations, effectively and efficiently.”
For her, Morocco’s nomination into larger African leadership represents yet another strong source of inspiration and a vital call to continue collective work in a world where rights and freedoms are constantly tested.
