A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed on Saturday in Rabat between Morocco’s House of Representatives and the National Assembly of Malawi, on the sidelines of the 3rd Annual General Assembly of the Conference of Speakers and Presidents of African Legislatures (CoSPAL).
Signed by the President of the House of Representatives, Rachid Talbi El Alami, and the Speaker of Malawi’s National Assembly, Sameer Gaffar Suleman, the MoU aims to strengthen communication between parliamentarians and the bodies of both legislative institutions, coordinate positions at regional, continental, and international levels, and uphold democratic values while consolidating the rule of law, according to a statement from the Moroccan House of Representatives.
The agreement also seeks to establish ongoing consultation across all joint parliamentary organizations, coordinate positions within this framework, exchange experiences and expertise between friendship groups, specialized committees, and administrative bodies of both institutions, and promote the sharing of best practices in parliamentary work.
Alongside the signing ceremony, the President of the House of Representatives and his Malawian counterpart held bilateral talks focused on the importance of the MoU for advancing parliamentary cooperation between the two legislative bodies.
The two parties also reviewed the various challenges facing the African continent, as well as several issues of mutual interest.
In a press statement, the Speaker of Malawi’s National Assembly highlighted the importance of joint action among African parliaments, emphasizing the central role of the MoU in strengthening collective parliamentary action and establishing bridges of cooperation between the two legislative institutions.
