Dam Levels in Bouregreg-Chaouia Basin Reach Over 88% Capacity

Dam levels in the Bouregreg-Chaouia river basin have increased significantly this year, reaching 88.31% of total capacity as of January 2, according to official data from the Bouregreg and Chaouia Water Basin Agency.

The total volume of water stored in the dams now stands at around 978 million cubic meters, out of a normal storage capacity of approximately 1.1 billion cubic meters. This marks a strong improvement compared to the same period last year.

The total water reserves recorded a yearly increase of 577 million cubic meters, representing a rise of 52.1%. Dam levels stood at only 36.21% ath the same time last year, with a total volume of 401 million cubic meters.

The Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdellah Dam, the largest in the basin, recorded a storage level of 919.2 million cubic meters, which is 94.3% of its total capacity. This is a sharp increase compared to 368.9 million cubic meters, or 37.84%, during the same period last year.

Other dams in the region also showed notable improvements. Tamesna Dam reached 25.26 million cubic meters, or 44.32%, up from 29.14% last year. Al-Malah Dam stored 20.17 million cubic meters, representing 57.63%, compared to 29.52% in the previous year.

Meanwhile, Ain El Kaouachia Dam recorded a storage level of 11.26 million cubic meters, exceeding its normal capacity with a filling rate of 102.36%. It stood at 36.64% during the same period last year.

These figures show a strong recovery in water reserves across Morocco after the heavy rainfall the country has recorded last month. The heavy rain is set to continue this month acoss several regions, with the weather authority issuing several alerts and urging locals to be cautious.

In addition, several schools across Morocco have suspended classes due to the unstable weather.

Morocco’s Ministry of Transport warned road users against unnecessary travel and to drive safely during unstable weather.
