The city of Essaouira has enjoyed exceptional momentum since the start of the year, with four major American productions by Netflix, Universal Studios, NBC and Amazon filming on its territory, said, on Wednesday in Essaouira, Advisor to HM the King and Founding President of the Essaouira-Mogador Association, André Azoulay.
Speaking at the opening of the second edition of “La Dolce Vita à Mogador”, a long-awaited event bringing together Moroccan cinephiles and the great Italian school of cinema, Azoulay welcomed “Essaouira’s reunion with the art of cinema”, recalling in this regard that “since the birth of the cinematograph, nearly a hundred major productions have chosen Essaouira to shoot in, and that in a gesture that remains engraved in the memory of all of us, it was to Morocco that Orson Welles dedicated the Gold Medal he won at Cannes for his legendary film Othello, shot in this city”.
Highlighting Essaouira’s vocation and exceptional potential “as a land of choice for the film industry”, Azoulay stressed that “we have every reason to aim for the highest summits by mobilizing opinion leaders and decision-makers of the world of cinema to encourage them to take the right measure of Morocco’s offer and assets in Essaouira and elsewhere”.
For his part, Italian ambassador in Rabat, Armando Barucco, commended this major cinematographic event, pointing out that this second edition represents a real leap forward, with a program spread over four days, packed with screenings and enriching encounters.
