The death toll from the collapse of two adjacent buildings in the Al Massira district in Fez on Tuesday night has risen to 22, with 16 people injured to varying degrees, according to local authorities, following search and rescue operations.
Preliminary data showed that the collapsed buildings were constructed in 2006 as part of a self-build project for the residents of the Ain Smen douar under the “Fez, a slum-free city” program.
In parallel with the judicial investigation conducted under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor’s office, administrative inquiries have been launched, while a technical assessment was entrusted to a specialized engineering firm with a view to collecting all data related to this incident, identifying the technical causes of the collapse of the two buildings, and determining any procedural malfunctions that may have affected the legal procedures and regulatory standards in force in the field of urban planning and construction, the same source said.
According to local authorities, these administrative and technical investigations aim to establish administrative and technical responsibilities in connection with this tragedy.
