Morocco continues to position itself as one of the most attractive destinations not only for tourists but also for retirees seeking to immerse in cultural flavors and hospitality warmth.
A new report by the website Capital highlights that the North African country is French retirees’ best destination.
Reporting on videos of the experience of French retirees living in Morocco captured by crews of the French channel TF1, Capital noted that approximately 4,000 of them reside in Agadir alone.
The tourists are “drawn to the country for its fiscal benefits and peaceful retirement opportunities,” the news outlet said, citing Morocco’s tourism assets like the Atlas landscapes, hospitality, and colorful beaches across the country.
The report further highlighted the experience of some French retirees, including Nathalie and Yves, both from Marseille.
Both in their early 60s, the two retirees reportedly left France due to high living costs.
“They now live in Agadir with a monthly budget of Є2,800.”
Capital has zoomed in on the house the couple rent in the city of Agadir, which costs Є800 monthly, with electricity and water costing them an additional Є100.
Similar prices are well managed for people with similar costs, but surely not for low and average income Moroccans, whose salaries are significantly lower than the amount the French retirees spend on rent.
While salaries continue to stagnate, Moroccan households are left to grapple with prohibitively high commodity prices.
But for Nathalie and Yves, the situation is way better, as they seem more concerned with the fiscal generosity of their host country.
“French retirees benefit from tax exemptions requiring only a local bank account,” the report said, with Nathalie she was amazed when a woman told her she comfortably lives under a Є1,000 budget.
“There’s a pleasant lifestyle here, absent in other Moroccan cities,” Natalie said of Agadir, which is also an attractive destination for the report’s author, who highlighted the growing numbers of French retirees living there.
In addition to attracting retirees, Morocco is poised to welcome more tourists in the coming years as the country will be organizing the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and co-organizing the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
Morocco welcomed a record 15.87 million visitors by the end of November last year, representing a 20% increase. According to the tourism ministry, the North African country’s goal is to reach 17 million visits by 2026 and 26 million by 2030.
