Flash Floods in Moroccan Province Claim Seven Lives After One Hour of Torrential Rain

Heavy thunderstorm rainfall that struck the province of Safi, north of Essaouira, on Sunday evening caused exceptional flooding within a very short period of time, resulting in seven deaths due to flash floods that inundated several homes and businesses. Meanwhile, 20 people were rescued and taken to Mohammed V Hospital in Safi, according to local authorities.

These severe weather conditions also caused material damage, particularly in the city of Safi, which was especially hard hit, it was specified.

Thus, 70 homes and businesses in the Medina were flooded, while 10 vehicles were swept away by the torrents. Local authorities also reported damage to the road section linking Safi to the center of the Hrara commune, along Provincial Road No. 2300, as well as traffic disruptions on several roads within the city.

Public authorities and all stakeholders have undertaken a general mobilization of all logistical and human resources in order to respond immediately to this exceptional situation and to provide support and assistance to citizens, according to the same sources.
