The Florida State Senate adopted a historic Resolution celebrating the long-standing privileged relationship between the Kingdom of Morocco and the United States of America, and praising the continental leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI and the Sovereign’s initiatives to promote transatlantic ties and exchanges.
Adopted on Wednesday, the Resolution recalls the prominent place that the Kingdom occupies in the diplomatic history of America, Morocco being the first country in the world to recognize the independence of the United States in 1777, a relationship formalized in 1786 through a Treaty of Peace and Friendship – the oldest unbroken treaty in the U.S. diplomatic history.
Led by Senator Ana Maria Rodriguez, the Resolution also highlights the historic recognition by President Donald J. Trump, in December 2020, of Morocco’s full sovereignty over its Sahara, reaffirming the strategic alliance between the two nations and paving the way for a new era of cooperation in peace, security and regional development.
The Resolution, which comes in a particularly symbolic context marked by this year’s commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States, underlines that under the visionary leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Morocco stands out as a strategic hub and a vital gateway between Africa, Europe and the Americas. The text thus highlights the Royal Initiative for Atlantic Cooperation, an ambitious framework aimed at deepening political, economic and cultural ties between the African continent and the Americas.
As an active member of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), Morocco stands out as a vital gateway for enhanced partnership and mutually beneficial trade and investment between Africa and the United States, according to this Resolution, adopted as part of the 2026 edition of the “Miami-Dade Days” organized at the Florida State Capitol in Tallahassee.
Similarly, the Resolution reiterates the importance of the Free Trade Agreement between the United States and Morocco, signed in 2004, the only one of its kind concluded by the U.S. with an African country. This agreement continues to foster economic and commercial cooperation, making Morocco one of the United States’ key trade partners in Africa and encouraging bilateral investment and industrial collaboration.
Under this text, the State of Florida also recognizes the importance of the Kingdom of Morocco as a strategic link between Africa, Europe and the Americas, and welcomes the deepening of cooperation in the areas of trade, maritime industries, tourism, green energy and education.
The resolution thus acknowledges Morocco as a reliable partner and privileged interlocutor of the State of Florida, while welcoming in this regard the inauguration, in June 2025, of the Consulate General of the Kingdom in Miami, “a historic milestone underscoring Morocco’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic, economic and cultural ties with Florida and the broader southeastern United States”. The text further welcomes the Sister-Cities agreements concluded between regions, cities, and ports in Morocco and Florida, which promote exchanges and bilateral ties.
The Resolution further pays tribute to the Moroccan community established in the United States and its active role in strengthening the bonds of friendship and cooperation between the two nations.
Cultural and intercommunity exchanges, supported by the Consulate General of Morocco in Miami, continue to foster mutual understanding and strengthen ties between the Moroccan and Florida communities through events celebrating heritage, the arts, and intercultural dialogue, according to the text.
In a statement on this occasion, the Consul General of Morocco in Miami, Chafika El Habti, emphasized that the adoption of this Resolution by the Florida State Senate marks a “major historical event” that recognizes the strategic partnership between the Kingdom and Florida.
“This Resolution paves the way for a promising future, rich in opportunities for cooperation in the areas of trade, investment, renewable energy and education. Morocco and Florida will continue to build together a partnership of excellence for our people and our mutual interests,” she concluded.
