The Mohammed VI Foundation for Science and Health (FM6SS) and AstraZeneca signed a memorandum of understanding on Wednesday in Rabat for the joint development of Centers of Excellence dedicated to rare diseases, with the goal of strengthening Morocco’s healthcare ecosystem and improving care for patients affected by these conditions.

This partnership is part of a broader effort to offer innovative solutions to patients by facilitating diagnosis, access to treatment, and training for healthcare professionals. It includes the development of advanced diagnostic platforms, the integration of cutting-edge technologies in genetic testing, and the establishment of multidisciplinary hubs for care, research, and training.

In a statement to MAP, Saber Boutayeb, Director of the Mohammed VI Center for Research and Innovation, noted that this agreement marks the culmination of a collaborative effort with AstraZeneca laboratories at the regional level, not just within Morocco.

For his part, Rami Scandar, AstraZeneca’s Regional President for the Near East and Maghreb, stated that the partnership with the Foundation is built on five key pillars. The first is reducing the average diagnostic time for rare diseases-which can take up to five years-thus improving patient care. The second pillar involves establishing platforms for genetic testing in partnership with the Foundation.

The third focuses on training doctors, nurses, and caregivers to strengthen the capacity of those supporting patients with rare conditions. The fourth pillar concerns equitable access to treatment, through the introduction of medications priced appropriately for the Moroccan context, in coordination with the Ministry of Health. Finally, the fifth pillar aims to enhance epidemiological knowledge of rare diseases in Morocco through data collection and scientific monitoring.

This agreement further solidifies AstraZeneca’s commitment to sustainable growth and long-term partnership in Morocco, building on successful collaborations with the Mohammed VI Foundation for Science and Health. Together, the two partners are forging a shared path to address unmet medical needs and deliver a tangible, lasting impact for patients across the Kingdom.
