Fathi Jamal, the Technical Development Director at the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), has commended Morocco’s U20 national team for reaching the final of the FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile, saying that their achievement is “no coincidence.”
In an interview with FIFA, Jamal reflected on Morocco’s progress in youth football and compared the current generation, led by coach Mohamed Wahbi, to the 2005 squad he once managed, which reached the semi-finals of the U20 World Cup in the Netherlands.
‘Reaching the final was no surprise’
Jamal said he had been following the U20 team closely from the start and always believed in their potential.
“For me, this result was not a surprise. I’ve watched this team grow, and I was confident they would do well at the World Cup,” he said. “They reached the final thanks to teamwork and the great effort of coach Mohamed Wahbi, who truly deserves respect and recognition.”
He also sent a special message to the young players, led by captain Othmane Maâma, before their final match against Argentina, urging them to “stay calm and focused, just as they have since.
“I have great faith in their abilities, and I hope they bring the trophy home and write a new chapter in Moroccan football history,” the FRMF official added.
The Moroccan squad secured the historic qualification after beating France 5-4 in a penalty shootout. They are set to lock horns with favorites Argentina on Sunday.
