The National Council for Human Rights (CNDH) pleaded on Tuesday in Geneva for a human rights-based governance in the fields of water and energy, stressing the need to guarantee equitable and sustainable access to these vital resources.
Speaking at the interactive dialogue with the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to water and sanitation, held as part of the 60th session of the Human Rights Council (HRC), the president of the Regional Human Rights Commission of Dakhla-Oued Eddahab, Maimouna Essayed, stressed the importance of involving all stakeholders in fair and sustainable governance that places human rights at the heart of public policies.
She emphasized the need to break away from a logic based solely on increasing water supply in favor of approaches based on managing demand and preserving aquatic ecosystems.
In this respect, Essayed praised Morocco’s efforts in the field of renewable energies and the rational use of water resources.
She recalled that this approach is in line with the recommendations made by the CNDH in its memorandum on the right to water, which includes 52 concrete proposals.
The document calls for a thorough inventory of water resources, their protection from pollution and overexploitation, and their equitable distribution between generations. It also recommends the widespread provision of safe sanitation services, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals, and the overhaul of agricultural models and sectoral policies that put excessive pressure on water resources.
The CNDH representative also called for recognition of the role of national human rights institutions (NHRIs) as recourse mechanisms in the face of violations of the right to water and sanitation.
