Police at the El Guerguerat crossing in southern Morocco thwarted on Monday evening an attempt to muggle three tons and 575 kilograms of hashish.

The drugs were hidden inside an international transport vehicle registered in Morocco, MAP quoted a security source as saying.

The operation was carried out jointly by the National Security and Customs and the Royal Gendarmerie.

The truck was thoroughly searched using sniffer dogs, leading to the discovery of the hashish hidden within a cargo of frozen fish, added the MAP report.

Police arrested the truck driver, identified as a 29-year-old Moroccan national.

A preliminary investigation is underway, under the supervision of the competent prosecutor, to uncover the circumstances of the case and identify other parties involved.

MAP said that the investigation will aim to investigate the regional and international ramifications of these criminal activities.

The report added that the operation is part of the ongoing and intensive efforts by various security services at the El Guerguerat border post to combat international drug trafficking, as well as monitor and fight all forms of transnational crime.

El Guerguerat is a major transit point for drug trafficking between Morocco and other regions, particularly West Africa and Europe.

It is located in the southern tip of Morocco near the border with Mauritania. This makes it strategically positioned as a key trafficking route used by smugglers to move drugs, primarily hashish and other illicit substances.
