Morocco has been unanimously endorsed by African member states of the African Regional Cooperative Agreement for Research, Development, and Training in Nuclear Science and Technology (AFRA) to host the 37th meeting of the AFRA Technical Committee in 2026.
The decision was announced during Morocco’s participation in the 69th regular session of the IAEA General Conference, held from September 15–19 in Vienna, Austria. The event will take place at Morocco’s National Center for Energy, Nuclear Science and Technology (CNESTEN).
Following the meeting, CNESTEN Director General Hamid Marah will assume the AFRA chairmanship from September 2026. AFRA is an intergovernmental agreement involving around 40 African countries, with the IAEA serving as its depositary.
Morocco’s upcoming AFRA presidency, coinciding with its term on the IAEA Board of Governors, highlights the country’s commitment to South-South cooperation under the leadership of His Majesty the King. It also reflects Morocco’s active role in developing and strengthening the skills of African experts in peaceful nuclear science and technology.
Established in 1990, AFRA aims to expand the use of nuclear science and technology for Africa’s socio-economic development, providing a framework for regional collaboration on targeted programs and projects. Its activities cover a wide range of peaceful nuclear applications, supporting national and regional development goals across the continent.
