Ambassador, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom to the International Organizations in Vienna Azzeddine Farhane, reiterated Morocco’s strong commitment to active South-South cooperation aimed at mutually strengthening national capacities in the field of nuclear and radiological safety.
“Morocco reiterates its strong commitment to active South-South cooperation aimed at creating new opportunities and mutually reinforcing national capacities, particularly in the area of nuclear and radiological safety,” he said in his speech to the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), held on March 2-6 in Vienna.
Speaking on agenda item 3, “Nuclear and Radiation Safety,” the diplomat welcomed the report of IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi, which “highlights Morocco’s commitment to international nuclear safety standards” and presents global trends and priorities for 2026.
The diplomat commended “IAEA’s continued efforts to maintain and strengthen nuclear, radiation, transport, and waste safety, as well as emergency preparedness and response (EPR) capabilities, focusing, among other aspects, on technical areas and geographical regions where needs are most pressing.”
Reaffirming that responsibility for nuclear safety rests entirely with States, in accordance with their national obligations and international commitments, Farhane recalled that Morocco has been engaging “steady efforts” to “upgrading its nuclear safety regulatory framework” and to “significantly updating its national regulatory texts, in accordance with IAEA safety standards.”
As part of this commitment, he continued, Morocco voluntarily hosted two IAEA review missions, noting that the Emergency Preparedness and Response Review (EPREV) mission commended the solid basis for Morocco’s national nuclear and radiological EPR and identified several best practices that go beyond the expectations set by IAEA safety standards.
For its part, the Integrated Regulatory Review Service (IRRS) mission underlined that Morocco has taken effective measures to establish a new coherent legal and regulatory framework for nuclear and radiological safety, the diplomat explained.
Following these missions, Farhane explained, “Morocco is ready to share its experience with IAEA member states,” particularly with regard to the modalities of organization, the substance and lessons learned from the review process.
In conclusion, the Moroccan diplomat reiterated the Kingdom’s steadfast commitment to “continue sharing its experience with African countries, upon their request,” as well as its full willingness to work with “its regional and international partners to contribute to strengthening the international nuclear safety regime and achieving the objectives of the IAEA.”
