Head of the Moroccan government Aziz Akhannouch announced on Wednesday that the emergency financial aid for residents affected by the Al Haouz earthquake will be extended for an additional five months. This follows directives from King Mohammed VI.
This aid, which amounts to MAD 2,500 (255 USD), aims to help residents complete the repairs of their damaged homes.
Akhannouch made the remarks during a press briefing after chairing the 12th meeting of the inter ministerial committee responsible for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of areas impacted by the earthquake.
He explained that this extension follows the completion of the initial 12-month aid program. The decision seeks to provide residents with the necessary support to finalize their housing repairs under optimal conditions.
Akhannouch urged beneficiaries of the support program to expedite their reconstruction efforts, highlighting that the initiatives aimed at rebuilding and rehabilitating the affected regions are progressing at a satisfactory pace.

The devastating earthquake hit central Morocco, mainly the Al Haouz region, in September 2023, claiming the lives of nearly 3,000 people and injuring thousands of others.
The earthquake was very strong; it was felt across Morocco, and even in Spain, Portugal, and Algeria. It was the deadliest earthquake to hit the country since the Agadir earthquake in 1960.
In addition to Al Haouz, which bore the brunt of the seismic event, It affected several other provinces, including Marrakech, Taroudant, Chichaoua, Azilal, and Ouarzazate.
Following the earthquake, King Mohammed VI launched a recovery plan with a budget of MAD 120 billion ($11.6 billion) over a period of five years.
The government additionally approved last month two decrees that seek to enhance earthquake resistance in construction, mainly in areas affected by recent seismic events.
