In a statement released today, the top body of Morocco’s majority coalition announced that it has decided to nominate Sidi Mohamed Oueld Errachid from the Istiqlal Party to serve as the next president of the House of Councillors for the second half of the chamber’s legislative term.
The decision comes in accordance with Article 63 of the constitution, which stipulates that the President of the House of Councillors, bureau members, and chairs and offices of the standing committees shall be elected at the start of the legislative term and again at the midpoint of the chamber’s legislative mandate.
The nomination also coincides with the current return to parliamentary business and the renewal of the House of Councillors’ structures.
Oueld Errachid was put forward to succeed current President Naam Miyara, also from the Istiqlal Party. Miyara was elected President of the House of Councillors on October 9, 2021 as the sole candidate following an agreement among the majority coalition leadership body. He secured 86 votes at the time with 6 spoiled ballots and 4 left blank.
Meanwhile, King Mohammed VI is set to chair the opening of the first session of the fourth legislative year of the 11th legislature on Friday evening at the seat of parliament. The King will deliver a speech before the members of both the House of Representatives and the House of Councillors, which will be broadcast live on radio and television starting at 4:40 p.m.
The legislative session traditionally opens every year with an address by the monarch on the second Friday of October. Members of parliament are required to wear traditional dress in line with the traditions of the two chambers.
