Malawi Renews Support for Morocco’s Sovereignty over Western Sahara

Malawi renewed its support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over its southern provinces in Western Sahara today.

Nancy Tembo, the country’s Foreign Affairs Minister conveyed her country’s support during his visit to Rabat, where she held talks with her counterpart Nasser Bourita.

She also commended the international consensus in support of Morocco’s Autonomy Plan, describing it as the only credible, serious, and realistic solution.

Malawi also expressed its support for the UN-led political process as the exclusive framework for reaching a realistic, practical, and sustainable solution to the regional dispute.

Tembo echoed the consensus among many officials across the continent and beyond.

 

In regards to other continental affairs, the diplomat said  Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, President of Malawi recognized Morocco’s Sahel initiative – describing it as  “enlightened and timely.”

The initiative is aimed to facilitate Sahelian countries’ access to the Atlantic Ocean, fostering intra-African cooperation.

Bourita also positively remarked on the bilateral ties the two countries have been witnessing, describing them as an “important development as part of the commitment by His Majesty King Mohammed VI” as well as the Malawian President as part of the South-South cooperation.

The Moroccan foreign minister recalled the efforts the two countries have been carrying out to deepen these ties, including a joint committee, the signing of several agreements, the reopening of the Malawi embassy in Rabat, and also the reception of the Malawian ambassador to the capital.

Both countries state they are committed to boosting cooperation at all levels, in security education, trade, and investment, among other sectors.

 

“Morocco has always expressed its contribution technically and financially to support Malawi in the face of natural disasters,” Bourita said, describing Malawi as an important ally.
