Morocco’s achievements in human rights and its ongoing engagement with UN bodies in this respect were highlighted during a conference held on Wednesday at the Faculty of Legal, Economic, and Social Sciences in Marrakech.
Organized by the Laboratory for Constitutional Studies and Crisis and Policy Analysis, the event brought together experts, researchers, students, and key stakeholders. It was part of the implementation of a framework agreement between Cadi Ayyad University (UCA) and the Interministerial Delegation for Human Rights.
During the conference, Secretary General of the Interministerial Delegation for Human Rights, Fatima Berkane, emphasized the significance of the constitutional reforms adopted in 2011, calling them one of the most important milestones in Morocco’s human rights journey.
Under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Morocco has implemented several mechanisms to strengthen human rights, including the establishment of governance and equity institutions such as the National Human Rights Council (CNDH), which plays a key role in monitoring and ensuring the respect of fundamental rights across various political and social spheres, Berkane explained.
She also highlighted Morocco’s strong commitment to international conventions, stating that the country’s engagement with UN mechanisms goes beyond legal obligations, but forms part of a broader national strategy aimed at advancing freedom and equality.
Berkane added that Morocco consistently submits periodic reports to international bodies, including the Human Rights Committee and the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, underscoring the country’s responsiveness to UN recommendations and its implementation of a wide range of concrete measures to strengthen citizens’ fundamental rights.
She also pointed to the legislative efforts and reforms undertaken by the government to protect human rights. These include new laws, judicial system reforms, expanded individual freedoms, enhanced rights for women and children, and stronger anti-discrimination measures.
Reaffirming Morocco’s commitment to further promoting human rights, Berkane stressed the importance of continuous engagement with UN mechanisms and alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
