Morocco and Finland have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen their bilateral cooperation in the field of meteorology, on the sidelines of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Congress, held from October 20 to 23 in Geneva.
The agreement was signed by Mohamed Dkhissi, Director General of Meteorology (DGM), and Petteri Taalas, Director General of the Finnish Meteorological Institute. The document outlines the two institutions’ shared commitment to foster collaboration in areas of mutual interest, including meteorology, climate, and environmental science.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Taalas, who also served as Secretary-General of the WMO, praised the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI in promoting environmental protection. He expressed his satisfaction with the prospect of deepening cooperation with Morocco in the meteorological field, following the example of many other European countries.
The Finnish official also commended Morocco’s significant efforts in meteorology and climatology, notably illustrated by the organization of COP22 in Marrakech in 2016.
For his part, Dkhissi emphasized that the signing of this MoU marks a new milestone in scientific cooperation between the two countries. The objective, he explained, is to modernize meteorological observation and assessment tools.
A total of 133 member states, including Morocco, are participating in the extraordinary WMO Congress, which aims to accelerate and expand the global “Early Warnings for All” initiative launched in 2022 by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, with the goal of achieving universal coverage by the end of 2027.
