Moroccan police at Casablanca’s Mohammed V International Airport arrested a Tunisian national on Monday night as he stepped off a flight from Tunisia.
French authorities had been searching for the 47-year-old man for several years under an international arrest warrant.
Police sources confirmed that the arrest followed routine checks against Interpol databases.
The suspect appeared on a red notice issued by France’s National Central Bureau in Paris back in 2021. He had fled from prison while serving a 30-year sentence handed down by a French court.
The charges against him include multiple armed robberies carried out as part of an organized gang, drug trafficking, and an armed murder case in the Netherlands.
Moroccan police placed the man in custody. The country’s Interpol bureau in Rabat has already notified French authorities as the extradition process moves forward.
The arrest notes Morocco’s role in international efforts to confront transnational crime. Security services across the country continue to coordinate with global partners to locate and detain fugitives sought by foreign courts.
In recent months, Morocco has stepped up its involvement in international security efforts, leading to a noticeable rise in arrests linked to Interpol notices. Authorities have reinforced border controls and deepened cooperation with foreign agencies, reflecting a broader strategy to counter transnational crime and uphold judicial agreements with partner countries.
