The Mohammed V Sports Complex in Casablanca is planning a temporary closure for repairs. In recent communication, both Raja and Wydad received official letters from SONARGES, the national agency for the management of sports facilities, which stated that the complex would close for renovation of the pitch.
In response to this notice, the two clubs from Casablanca reached out to the Wali of the Casablanca-Settat region, Mohamed Mhidia, in hopes of finding solutions.
A meeting is scheduled for early next week between the Wali, the presidents of Raja and Wydad, Jawad Ziyat and Hicham Aït Menna, and the president of the National Professional Football League (LNFP), Abdeslam Belghchour to determine an official date for closure, reschedule both teams, and potentially limit the interference of either team during their domestic and continental campaigns.
Mohammed V is closing for an important and necessary reason: to overseed the pitch before the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations which starts on December 21. This is done in all Moroccan stadiums and golf courses to restore and fortify the grass, to make sure they have a dense and strong surface for international matches.
The pitch is a hybrid natural grass system with 2 types of grass: Bermuda and Ray-grass, to resist the weather changes and to keep the quality all year round. This scheduled renovation work is necessary to meet CAF standards and to keep Casablanca’s biggest stadium in shape for next year’s continental.
