By supporting Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara, France has just taken “a historic step”, motivated by “common sense” and “the rejection of any separatist or secessionist inclinations”, former Peruvian Foreign Minister Miguel Rodriguez Mackay says.

In an editorial published on Sunday in the Peruvian daily “Expreso”, the former head of Peruvian diplomacy underlines that this decision comes two years after the change made by the President of the Spanish government, Pedro Sanchez, in the State’s foreign policy, considering the Moroccan autonomy initiative “as the most serious, realistic and credible basis to settle this dispute”.

According to this expert in international law, France has taken “a new step in its foreign policy” by supporting Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara.

The former Peruvian minister recalls, in this context, that “France is part of the United Nations Security Council (…) and its decision to express its support for Rabat must logically be interpreted as the formation of a bloc behind the decision adopted in 2020 by the United States of America, also a member of the Security Council, to recognize Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara”.
