France’s new position on the Moroccan Sahara, officially expressed by President Emmanuel Macron, is “a major geopolitical and diplomatic turning point” that enshrines Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara, stressed Brazilian academic Fabio Albergaria de Queiroz.

This “very important step” by Paris demonstrates “the pragmatism and effectiveness of the Royal diplomacy,” the professor of international relations and geopolitics told MAP, recalling the support already expressed by many influential countries for the Moroccan autonomy plan, such as the United States and Spain.

“There is no doubt that this is the best way to reaffirm what is already known: the relevance of the Moroccan autonomy plan for the Sahara,” de Queiroz stressed.

The academic said the autonomy plan will “put an end to the harmful effects” of this dispute, and will contribute to consolidating Morocco’s position as an undisputed leader and active actor in the region.

In a message addressed to HM King Mohammed VI, French President Emmanuel Macron officially informed the Sovereign that he “considers that the present and future of Western Sahara lie within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty”.

Macron also voiced France’s support to the Moroccan autonomy plan as “the only basis to achieve a just, lasting, and negotiated political solution, in accordance with United Nations Security Council resolutions.”
